The Dog Patrol rescused their FIRST dog in the beginning of the summer and learned what to do with a found dog. Fortunately for this senior dog, it was a very happy ending! <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6ucjPY17yk_wYQuee9zVG8AOsMp-q4c8V3Kj3KM-4KJQCwhq3eUgobjWimq_0wVF0fl3RDhZim3AUSiK1T0g-mxOxR7vf55pkdTDzUFnLg9rNX1LIZzpdyhLy4MP6AUSyCgzaO_3al9yg/s1600/Puppy+Charlie2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6ucjPY17yk_wYQuee9zVG8AOsMp-q4c8V3Kj3KM-4KJQCwhq3eUgobjWimq_0wVF0fl3RDhZim3AUSiK1T0g-mxOxR7vf55pkdTDzUFnLg9rNX1LIZzpdyhLy4MP6AUSyCgzaO_3al9yg/s1600/Puppy+Charlie2.JPG" height="305" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
We started calling him Charlie, but when we found his owner we learned that his name was Puppy. He had lived with a big family his WHOLE life, until his owner's family had all gone off to start families of their own. Puppy's Dad was all on his own now and was eager to find Puppy. We are so happy that thru the LA-SPCA lost and found department, The Dog Patrol and USED DOGS were able to reunite Puppy with his person.<br />
<br />
BUT, before we found Puppy's person, we HAD to wash him because he came to us SO SO smelly. He found something out in the world that I am imagining he enjoyed smelling like, but it was too much of an olfactory insult to us. SO, I suppose we insulted him right back by making him smell "nice" or less horrible. :)) He didn't love his bath, but he was ok with it. But at least he got more of the attention he wanted from the girls, because he wasn't so stinky. :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Puppy REALLY missed his family and WHINED all night long for the 3 nights he was here. He enjoyed the girls during the day. Puppy's person said that when he got Puppy, his girls were still living at home, were about the same age as the Dog patrol is and Puppy missed them now that they had grown up and left the nest.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Puppy is probably13- 14 years old. We are thrilled we found his Person so that Puppy and his Person can spend their golden years together. Puppy's Dad was beyond excited to get his PUPPY back!!</div>

<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px; text-align: left;"><br /></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; line-height: 17px;">Behavior issues are one of the most challenging subjects that Used Dogs get calls about and they are one of the main reasons dogs end up in shelters. We always are working on behavior issues here. Sometimes they are typical and sometimes they are very unique. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; text-align: left;"><span style="line-height: 17px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 17px; text-align: left;"> The way dogs respond to various </span></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 17px; text-align: left;">problem solving </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 17px; text-align: left;">approaches, shows us time and time again, that the individuality of all dogs trumps breed and that what works for one dog may not work at all for another. Dogs, no matter the breed, are not one size fits all.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; text-align: left;"><br /></span>
</span><br />
<div style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 17px;">The first thing thing to do when dealing with a behavior issue, is to make sure there is not an underlying health issue. Keeping your pets healthy and keeping yourself informed on different ways to </span><span style="background-color: transparent; color: #333333; line-height: 17px;">address problems is the best way to go. Should you give your dog <span id="goog_121165958"></span><a href="http://www.1800petmeds.com/Anxiety-cat75.html" target="_blank">pet meds</a><span id="goog_121165959"></span> or would a </span><span style="background-color: transparent; line-height: 17px;">thunder shirt </span></span><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 17px; text-align: left;">work. The interesting thing about Daisy is that TOYS were the answer...AND the problem.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: transparent; line-height: 17px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 17px; text-align: left;">Daisy now has much better play manners. She learned that it's about the game and not just the ball. She has gotten so much better at including us in her play and not just obsessing on the ball. It took some trial and error, and believe it or not , turned out to be about the types of balls we used!!!</span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/FIFeTDXaMxM?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px; text-align: left;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; line-height: 17px; text-align: left;">Here is how it happened:</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; line-height: 17px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; line-height: 17px; text-align: left;">Daisy, a very smart dominant female, came here with very obsessive play manners, which was really a problem, since she doesn't do well with other dogs. For Daisy, playing with humans, toys and walks are the only ways she is going to have fun, get exercise and get engaged with life. And when a dog doesn't do well playing with other dogs, toys are even more important!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 17px; text-align: left;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; text-align: left;"><span style="line-height: 17px;">Daisy was VERY obsessive about her toys. It wasn't even really regular rescource guarding, it was always just ALL about the toy, NEVER about the game. Once she got the toy in her mouth there was no way to play WITH her. A dog that obsesses to that degree over her toys and can't play with other dogs, doesn't usually have very good adoption </span></span><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="line-height: 17px;">options. </span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="line-height: 17px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="line-height: 17px;">Her obsession was SO intense that it was sometimes dangerous and even though she was super smart, at first I was at a loss as to what I could do. First I decided to take away toys since they ramped up the obsessiveness so much in her behavior. That got boring real fast! And consequently, since Daisy doesn't like being out in the yard unless she has a toy to obsess on, Daisy began to spend more and more time inside alone in her crate. And surprisingly, she didn't seem to mind. Since the squeaky wheel gets the grease, and we have lot of squeaky wheels here, Daisy stayed in doing a lot of nothing. She would go out to to do her business and go on walks. Then I hurt my </span><span style="line-height: 17px;">knee, so walks were even getting fewer for her as she is A LOT of dog and only certain volunteers could walk her.</span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="line-height: 17px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="line-height: 17px;">SO, I thought about changing the toys. I gave her toys that gave her no shaking satisfaction and that were VERY sturdy and toys she could not "kill". That was better, much better. But she still just wanted to play by herself. Getting the toy away from her, so that we could play together and give her more exercise, rather than her just sitting and obsessing was still impossible. Even just to get the toy away from her when play time was over, was very difficult and even a little dangerous as she was so obsessed with the toy, that it was clear that she might accidentally bite me, trying to get to the toy before I could, when she would occasionally let go of it or get interested in something else for a minute.</span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="line-height: 17px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="line-height: 17px;">So THAT was my next move, getting her interested in other things while she was playing with the toy. Previously that was IMPOSSIBLE, but now with the new kinds of toys it seemed possible.</span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="line-height: 17px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="line-height: 17px;">It turned out that other toys did not work so well, but treats did. However once she became interested in the treat all was on good, until she noticed me going towards her toy. Then she was back to the toy in a FLASH and she is a very quick dog. Her trying to get to the toy before me, made the chance of a bite even MORE likely, as she was VERY excited about getting to the toy before I did.</span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="line-height: 17px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="line-height: 17px;">That was when I realized it would take two trainers: one to distract with a treat and one to take away the toy. Working in pairs and in some instances the whole family is often what it takes to deal with difficult behavior issues.</span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="line-height: 17px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="line-height: 17px;">It worked like a charm. SO well in fact, that we decided to go pick out some new toys for her. This time, there happened to be some new sturdy ball type toys that made a variety of sounds that I hadn't seen before. One had a bell and texture, one had crunching sound and one had a squeak. I had stopped using toys with noises as the squeaky toys were originally the ones that she was the worst with!</span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="line-height: 17px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="line-height: 17px;">But it turned out to be the variety of sounds that really engaged her with us and made it more about the game and less about the toy. The variety of toys with different sounds allowed us to make a MAJOR breakthrough!! When there were several balls with different sounds, the part of her that had to think and choose opened her up to playing WITH us and not just the toy.</span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="line-height: 17px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="line-height: 17px;">It was a happy day indeed!!</span></span></span><br />

<div style="font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 11px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">But rescue, for me, is not just about what we do for the animals and not even about what they do for us, but about the amazing lessons they teach me. This year we lost an amazing <a href="http://useddogsrescue.blogspot.com/2012/12/roman.html"><span style="color: #2d2cfa; letter-spacing: 0px;"> dog </span></a> who was the reason Used Dogs has been able to use playgroups so well for over the last 10 years. And countless other dogs here <a href="http://useddogsrescue.blogspot.com/2011/06/update-on-family-of-red-dogs-that.html"><span style="color: #1a1aa6; letter-spacing: 0px;">teach</span></a> me more and more everyday. I used that knowledge this year to do lots of <a href="http://useddogsrescue.blogspot.com/2012/12/surrender-intervention-what-is-it.html"><span style="color: #1a1aa6; letter-spacing: 0px;">surrender intervention</span></a>, so that fewer dogs end up in high kill shelters.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 11px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Please help us to keep up this work. <span style="color: red;">DONATE</span>,<span style="color: red;"> by going to the donate button on the right side of the blog</span>, <span style="color: #1a1aa6; letter-spacing: 0px;"> </span><span id="goog_1681929792"></span><span id="goog_1681929793"></span><a href="http://www.blogger.com/"></a>if you can. We still have vet bills due and several dogs waiting for treatment. </span><br />
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><br /></span>
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">We also have some fantastic plans for 2013. Come volunteer and be a part of them. Be a foster parent. Fostering REALLY helps the dogs get adopted sooner and can be a really rewarding experience.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 11px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Please think about the pets that are still here this Holiday Season waiting for their forever homes. They would love special treats. They like bully sticks and toys that don’t have the stuffing. </span><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">Ok, they like they stuffing. I don’t. LOL</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 11px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Due to the problems with tainted dog treats/foods perhaps a Petco or Petcetera gift card would be best. But we do like Peanut butter (regular human kind) and we use <a href="http://bluebuffalo.com/healthy-dog-food" target="_blank">Blue Buffalo</a> dog food, Purina Pro Plan and <span style="color: #1a1aa6; letter-spacing: 0px;">Colorado naturals treats!</span></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 11px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">

<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></div>

<br />
Sofia definitely had a really rough start. She belonged to someone who, according to neighbors, had lots of personal problems and therefore more often than not, did not look after Sofia. Sofia was frequently found roaming the streets as a young pup. The neighbors would bring her back home and remind the owner over and over that they feared she might get hit by a car if he continued to allow her to run loose.<br />

At about 4 months old, she was hit by a car. It broke her leg. The neighbors took her in to the vet and paid for the splint required for Sofia to heal properly. The neighbors told the owner that the splint could not get wet. Next thing you know, Sofia is running around the neighborhood with a wet unraveling useless splint.<br />
<br />
The neighbors were understandably at their wits end. They turned her in to animal control, planning to get her out after the five day hold. They were advised that then, they would have legal ownership of the dog if the original owner did not claim her.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihiOVXpTr8OkTpPRTETQOGUQLtyY4ArgxTBz42zRAxoapqlP1QemAR15LRR56hB4X3rSU3q3GYtYNNys2uyv-quGa03DgQWcMEbuFrj53AY6bdqVvDly4ZCwqFcEbLOaWPbBNR8muXkfn1/s1600/Sofia.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihiOVXpTr8OkTpPRTETQOGUQLtyY4ArgxTBz42zRAxoapqlP1QemAR15LRR56hB4X3rSU3q3GYtYNNys2uyv-quGa03DgQWcMEbuFrj53AY6bdqVvDly4ZCwqFcEbLOaWPbBNR8muXkfn1/s200/Sofia.JPG" width="194" /></a>That's where I came in. The plan was for me to get her from animal control after the 5 day hold. She was spayed and prepared for a release into rescue. I went to visit her everyday. BUT when the day came to get her out, I spent WAY too much time waiting. As 1 hour turned into 2, I knew something had to be wrong. Finally they came out and told me - Sofia has parvo!!!<br />
<br />
They let me go see her again. I have seen parvo and I just did not believe she was sick. I was faced with a really tough decision. Take her out and possibly expose MY WHOLE shelter to parvo or let her be euthanized.<br />
<br />
I went with my gut feeling and took her out of the shelter anyway and took her to a vet right away. The vet said she did not have parvo. She never came down with parvo.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
BUT WAIT - the sort of Sofia continues!!!! </div>
<br />
Due to an abundance of caution, she was quarantined for a period. When that period was up I was so excited to see how she did with the other dogs. SHE WAS A MESS!! I had never seen anything like it. She wasn't aggressive, she was just VERY obnoxiously socially awkward with other dogs. Imagine a person you never met, swinging their arms in full circles wearing a BIG smile coming at you and stopping 1/8th of an inch in front of your face and running into your body, screaming HELLO!!!! That's what she was like to all the other dogs.<br />
<br />
From the way she seemed to understand almost no doggie language or etiquette I suspected that she might have been taken away from the litter too young. Plus she was wild and was 6 months old with NO TRAINING!! She was a maniac!<br />
<br />
Anyway we worked with her and realized quickly that she was VERY smart. She got better and betterer. She learned agility and roll over during our Kids Camp.<br />

We are most fortunate because we also know the parents; it is rare in rescue to know what both parents of puppies look like. The parents are only about 20 to 25 pounds, and appear to be Schipperke and Pomeranian mixes.</span></div>

Now, I want to share more of this story with you, because it is rather unique and very rewarding for those of us who are involved in rescue. We were at an adoption event when a Vietnamese gentleman came up to us. His English was very limited, but it appeared he wanted to give us this litter of puppies. We explained to him that we don't take puppies at adoption events but, rather than leave him in a lurch, we set up a time to go to his home. </div>
<div style="color: #333233; font: 13.0px 'Lucida Grande'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 16.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></div>
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><b>When we arrived, we found not only a litter of puppies, but three adult dogs as well. It was also apparent that this dog loving man lived in a fairly isolated Vietnamese community. He wanted to keep his adult dogs, but asked us to take the puppies. As we talked, we found out that he had no idea that dogs could be spay/neutered! Wow, was he excited about that. And we were excited that he was excited! Too often people don't care about how many litters their dogs produce. That wasn't the case here. This man did not want to have the responsibility of puppies, and was thrilled to find out there was a solution. He simply did not have access to the information resources. </b></span><br />
<div style="color: #333233; font: 13.0px 'Lucida Grande'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 16.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></div>
<h4>
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Since then, all of the puppies have been spayed/neutered and are available for adoption. The adults will be spay/neutered next week and returned to their loving owner. This might not mean a lot to you, but in the world of rescue, this is a great victory; we know that the number of unwanted pets can best be addressed through spay/neuter. This is the perfect example!</span></h4>

<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Of course DONATIONS are always very much appreciated, so that we can continue the work that we do! There is a paypal link on the home page of this blog. THANKS!</span></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
WHY??</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Because this dog was rescued from certain death at a housing project that was being demolished after Katrina. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The workers were afraid of the dogs that had packed up, and began to poison them.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Used Dogs rescued 7 litters and 5 adult dogs. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Ophelia, now Lily, was one of the adults.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She was always shy. I wondered if she would ever find a forever home that would know her like I did and appreciate her gentle nature. Ophelia/Lily is another example of how just reading canine body language "by the book" is not always accurate. There are always variations and exceptions to the rules. Sure, to the inexperienced or certainly for children you always want to be safe and cautious, but Ophelia's body language did NOT express the GEM she truly was!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But thanks to an AWESOME woman Ophelia/Lily went from the photos below to the photo you see above!</div>

Lily's sister OLIVIA is still here and would make a wonderfully friend. She is not like Lily, she is very outgoing and BOLD. She is charming and vivacious. She did great with the kids at Kid's Camp. She is smart and great with basic manners. Crate trained and does a really sweet roll over! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
She is red heeler shepherd mix and is the very LAST dog from the BW Coopers rescues that is still here. All of the other puppies and adults have found their forever homes.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Willis came to us with the most severe case of demodex we had ever seen!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqjl8umqT4T9zDnyIQVBKWFlKSSODj1ECXN9HGMLuTuUUe63PgukqpWRC0TJPQVc9YWR6lHrolbKYUAgamXPnHNKQgcUwMiZ2xe_aEf8Hz0OI3zEX0dfoFYG4qaGXjgBgUj0-Gblh_bsks/s1600/Willis15.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqjl8umqT4T9zDnyIQVBKWFlKSSODj1ECXN9HGMLuTuUUe63PgukqpWRC0TJPQVc9YWR6lHrolbKYUAgamXPnHNKQgcUwMiZ2xe_aEf8Hz0OI3zEX0dfoFYG4qaGXjgBgUj0-Gblh_bsks/s640/Willis15.jpg" width="476" /></a></div>
<br />
Found on a city street, right after a Tropical Storm. Willis presented as such a PARIAH, so hideous looking, that we are certain that this sweet boy was shunned over and over again while just looking for a friendly word or snack...Not ever even thinking that a home would EVER be in the cards for him!<br />
<br />
<br />
But after MANY months of TLC and treatment, Willis found a home.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzL3Ag00j5GQNdoGn2Qd35IDCLboOrZnTs2M5W7x8aiEMpNyGILHdGX5pVlCukHGV4xbFiFcH-z1YPGuZIlJOC4mvFuDnjrxWu0DBs0x1aTyz6zPw2PpWl9yNifufj3SYHdItU8o9vtx4L/s1600/Willis96.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzL3Ag00j5GQNdoGn2Qd35IDCLboOrZnTs2M5W7x8aiEMpNyGILHdGX5pVlCukHGV4xbFiFcH-z1YPGuZIlJOC4mvFuDnjrxWu0DBs0x1aTyz6zPw2PpWl9yNifufj3SYHdItU8o9vtx4L/s320/Willis96.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Bear was Willis' neighborbor's dog. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In the yard neighboring Willis' new home, Bear was on a chain. We soon came to find that Bear 's owner was AWOL. In prison. So Bear was released to Used Dogs. He was heartworm positive. After 6 months of rehab, Bear found a home of his own. he has been treated for heartworm and is officially clear and healthy!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
A few months of seeing how happy Bear was OFF THE CHAIN, George's family relinquished George to Used Dogs.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
George had been on a chain for his WHOLE life. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
THREE YEARS!! </div>

<div>
Used Dogs had our first Kid's camp this year and it went really well.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span id="goog_37062019"></span></div>
<div>
We got amazing groups of kids who are going to no doubt grow up to be fantastic advocates for animals</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Our goal for the summer was to get our shyest dog, Festus confident enough for an outing! We made our goal and Festus is doing great!!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
We also we worked with basic obedience, some agility and socialization.<br />

Roman</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The most wonderful dog who taught me oh so much!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc2mLm2J3odrj9RxvEjWGx1oFW0x1WOpeLDRdtRvfQL67fncHxg9qIYznwuMu7v8nZrPQihkjEFoO-kc5TMbOr9iryQkocQdzDsnOdrwVdkFhJB5ANQfhwZhKTdNjigDA4Rp3aoYOLOL-v/s1600/Roman.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc2mLm2J3odrj9RxvEjWGx1oFW0x1WOpeLDRdtRvfQL67fncHxg9qIYznwuMu7v8nZrPQihkjEFoO-kc5TMbOr9iryQkocQdzDsnOdrwVdkFhJB5ANQfhwZhKTdNjigDA4Rp3aoYOLOL-v/s640/Roman.jpg" width="416" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Roman died this year of bone cancer. He was diagnosed and gone in all of 2 months.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We loved him as much as we could and gave him acupuncture to ease his pain.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Roman taught ME so much about dogs and how dogs communicate. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
An AMAZINGLY balanced and unique dog.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It was as though he knew what his job was here.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
He certainly knew it,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
before I realized it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The Used Dogs dog yard and play groups have never been the same.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
DOG to DOG intros will probably never be so easy for me ever again.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am still waiting to see who will step up to take his place.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Check back as I will write much more about what he taught me soon.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
Penelope came from a VERY unfortunate situation. The conditions in the yard were filthy. No one was taking care of her AT ALL...not even just a little bit!! She, quite obviously, was NEVER being fed.<br />
<br />
<br />
She was DYING!! <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKwrVviL3wxWC7OrC47iTf5-OsBT_dS_oYDkJfH0jpZvNJnyKOUVWK1e38ZaveguBuNox2kQ7CD_H1p-V48HdeBsnx0sd09adSZ4Xg9ciGxCfpaI1rutBcFF3gXrFNVpxn_EekUcmrVSUw/s1600/PenSKIN.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5623662359637988770" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKwrVviL3wxWC7OrC47iTf5-OsBT_dS_oYDkJfH0jpZvNJnyKOUVWK1e38ZaveguBuNox2kQ7CD_H1p-V48HdeBsnx0sd09adSZ4Xg9ciGxCfpaI1rutBcFF3gXrFNVpxn_EekUcmrVSUw/s320/PenSKIN.JPG" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; float: right; height: 165px; margin: 0 0 10px 10px; width: 320px;" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
AND she had puppies!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
She really put our USED DOGS motto to the test.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #3333ff;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">Rescue efficiently, not emotionally. </span></span></b> </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Getting really angry, rude and sad would not have done much for Penelope. SO, we just changed her life in the most immediate way we could.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We focused on WHAT could be done for her, HOW it could be done for her and the very important part about HOW WE COULD MAKE IT AFFORDABLE! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We did not waste time on who to blame. Although of course people should be held accountable, holding this person accountable would NOT have helped Penelope!! The laws are a little weak and take a really long time to pursue. The property where Penelope and her puppies were, has already had ALL their dogs removed by authorities SEVERAL times!!! So to me, that is another issue that needs to be dealt with, but not at the expense of Penelope. Perhaps when I have a minute, I will look into what the actual laws are for habitual offenders, if ,in fact, there are any.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This was "JUST" a case of extreme neglect. I think time prosecuting is better spent on bigger cases of abuse. Although, of course for Penelope, this case is as important as a case can be. That's why we didn't want her to be "evidence". We wanted to make her life better! And it is.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
She is no longer the skeleton of a dog that she was, in the filthy yard she was stuck in. Her body is no longer riddled with necrotic tissue.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
She is a happy dog. She enjoys her days. She loves visitors. She is almost done with her <a href="http://blog.petmeds.com/%22%3Epet%20meds%3C/a%3E">pet meds</a>. USED DOGS is getting her stronger everyday so that she can be treated for heartworms. She WILL find a home.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">BUT, WE MUST GET HER BILL PAID!!!</span></span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In order to be able to rescue another dog on another day, we CAN'T owe our vets. USED DOGS appreciates our vets SO MUCH. One way we show our appreciation, is by paying them in a timely manner.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Our vet did all of this for Penelope for an incredible rate! Easily $1000.00 less than is should have cost. The whole veterinary team at Algiers Animal Hospital really gave of themselves for this girl!! Quote from the vet "Penelope is an awesome dog!"</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE contribute to the cost of her care if you can! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
PLEASE consider making a donation to her care. You can donate on thru PayPal on our facebook page. Or you can donate directly to the vet. If you would like to donate directly to the vet call me at 504-442-3647. Or call Algiers Animal Hospital directly at 504-364-1556. If you do call the Vet, please be considerate and remember that they are a very busy practice. All donation are very much appreciated, but it would be best if the smaller ones were mailed to us or sent thru PayPal. You can also mail a donation to: USED DOGS PO Box 741163, New Orleans, LA 70174</div>

This is her lovely new family. She has moved to Connecticut. And not a moment too soon. Hurricane season has just started and it is record-breaking BOILING HOT today here in New Orleans.<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I personally learned so much from these three little red dogs. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Because they had no real contact with humans before we trapped them, we knew that it would be a bit of a challenge to get them comfortable with people. Having raised and prepared dozens of litters of puppies for adoption, I figured that when I started seeing certain signs, things were going to be A-OK. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And as I had kind of predicted and hoped for, they began to show those signs. They went from not even wanting to make eye contact with anyone to running up to greet me and see whether I had brought treats when visiting their kennel.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
However these little guys fooled me. Their mix of breeds probably played a significant role. Being a mix of Chow and Akita, they were only like this when completely in their comfort zone around other dogs. I found this out when I brought one into my home to see how crate and potty training was going to go. The first one immediately panicked and tried to jump out a second floor window. Once the window was closed she continued to try, hitting the glass.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The second one growled at me.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My heart sank. I was going to have problems. Finding adoptive homes for puppies that growl and try to jump out windows is not an easy task. perhaps not even a prudent one. I called the person who had adopted their brother many weeks ago. To my relief, things were going well. Django had bonded well with her.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We had to redefine their comfort zone and fast! A new routine was devised and with patience and consistency, they began adjusting really well. And now Ella is adopted and Miles is in a great foster home!</div>

USED DOGS decided to step in when we heard that the large field where she made her home, was being prepped for construction. It could have been very dangerous for her to be put in a situation where construction workers would decide her fate. They could scare her, accidentally injure her or call a group that would not have given her a second chance. So USED DOGS decided it was definitely time to catch this girl. USED DOGS has experience in trapping and that was clearly the best option to get a hold of her. The situation was also becoming more urgent because recent sightings of her were telling us that she had just had a litter of puppies and it is very important to get the pups as early as possible to give them the best chance at socialization. USED DOGS was relying on intel from the neighborhood to keep track of her whereabouts. We heard about some puppies under an unoccupied house. We were hoping that these were hers, but when we went to the house there were no puppies in sight. We were reassured that the puppies were absolutely there, so after surveying the location we set the trap the next day and within twenty minutes we had a momma and a pup! </span></span></div><div><span><span><br />And it was indeed our girl!<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnMKBzeWRak_aGJa8-MRQ3sEYgCuqicJL9xGvtULVaIsN_lycgi4M8unBEFMGKt83a1kslB7tm8q38nWVvI4nqHCvKVKoRdzJzxNubNBnfXfML-eoboRK-I4cPiN4Q7HiC2ZG3vAeAF6nc/s1600/DSC_0155.JPG"><img style="float: left; margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 283px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnMKBzeWRak_aGJa8-MRQ3sEYgCuqicJL9xGvtULVaIsN_lycgi4M8unBEFMGKt83a1kslB7tm8q38nWVvI4nqHCvKVKoRdzJzxNubNBnfXfML-eoboRK-I4cPiN4Q7HiC2ZG3vAeAF6nc/s320/DSC_0155.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5573641907488234482" border="0" /></a></span></span></div><div><span><span><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhugOWY0UhAL7lRtUmhwkC2lcByLAoKuIgplsyKcXlGfG68IuXqo2XD_aC4YcoCt2rUH1A4SUTWb0hXHx7VIiahMHwzTuU5JXxBrDYmaW4eHpnof-blcXXIlYen7W5ROm0CHGlT-eqaQkt0/s1600/DSC_0144.JPG"><img style="float: right; margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; cursor: pointer; width: 290px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhugOWY0UhAL7lRtUmhwkC2lcByLAoKuIgplsyKcXlGfG68IuXqo2XD_aC4YcoCt2rUH1A4SUTWb0hXHx7VIiahMHwzTuU5JXxBrDYmaW4eHpnof-blcXXIlYen7W5ROm0CHGlT-eqaQkt0/s320/DSC_0144.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5573646008383043042" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgn319FDka4P-kh4uhkJEXzXt70myGcyJcfKWY5PRIrh30iSXylb1a7QeIsF_lGnU5ajzp3tS-zAZdc68ivsnN-liJXUl0Hg4H74klZESdbyzVWTSvHdgDfBPOJUau2FVKZIriei6uOQfDQ/s1600/Django135.JPG"><img style="float: right; margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 271px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgn319FDka4P-kh4uhkJEXzXt70myGcyJcfKWY5PRIrh30iSXylb1a7QeIsF_lGnU5ajzp3tS-zAZdc68ivsnN-liJXUl0Hg4H74klZESdbyzVWTSvHdgDfBPOJUau2FVKZIriei6uOQfDQ/s320/Django135.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5573641382031862418" border="0" /></a></span></span></div><div><span><span><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span>Neighbor sources told us that there were definitely more babies under the house. It was going to possibly be much more difficult to get these babies, because they had seen their mom and siblings get caught by the trap and might understandably be a little wary of the trap. Any experienced trapper knows that the key to overcoming this problem is some very enticing bait! So enticing that even though the dogs are scared, they simply just cannot help themselves, but go towards the very fragrant and delicious food. All of the recent arrivals had no idea what to think, as they had never experienced a day like this before. But the animals who had been waiting for their beloved people knew exactly what was going on and started to gather at the pathway leading to The Bridge to watch.<br /><br />It wasn't long before an elderly animal came into view, head hung low and tail dragging. The other animals, the ones who had been there for a while, knew what his story was right away, for they had seen this happen far too often.<br /><br />He approached slowly, obviously in great emotional pain, but with no sign of injury or illness. Unlike all of the other animals waiting at The Bridge, this animal had not been restored to youth and made healthy and vigorous again. As he walked toward The Bridge, he watched all of the other animals watching him. He knew he was out of place here and the sooner he could cross over, the happier he would be. But, alas, as he approached The Bridge his way was barred by the appearance of an Angel who apologized, but told him that he would not be able to pass. Only those animals who were with their people could pass over Rainbow Bridge.<br /><br />With no place else to turn to, the elderly animal turned towards the fields before The Bridge and saw a group of other animals like himself, also elderly and infirm. They weren't playing, but rather simply lying on the soft green grass, forlornly staring out at the pathway leading to The Bridge. And so, he took his place among them, watching the pathway and waiting.<br /><br />One of the newest arrivals at The Bridge didn't understand what he had just witnessed and asked one of the animals that had been there for awhile to explain it to him.<br /><br />"You see, that poor animal was a rescue. He was turned in to rescue just as you see him now, an older animal with his fur graying and his eyes clouding. He never made it out of rescue and passed on with only the love of his rescuer to comfort him as he left his earthly existence. Because he had no family to give his love to, he has no one to escort him across The Bridge."<br /><br />The first animal thought about this for a minute and then asked, "So what will happen now?" As he was about to receive his answer, the clouds suddenly parted and the gloom lifted.<br /><br />Approaching The Bridge could be seen a single person and among the older animals, a whole group was suddenly bathed in a golden light and they were all young and healthy again, just as they were in the prime of life.<br /><br />"Watch, and see.", said the second animal. A second group of animals from those waiting came to the pathway and bowed low as the person neared. At each bowed head, the person offered a pat on the head or a scratch behind the ears. The newly restored animals fell into line and followed him towards The Bridge. They all crossed The Bridge together.<br /><br />"What happened?"<br /><br />"That was a rescuer. The animals you saw bowing in respect were those who found new homes because of her work. They will cross when their new families arrive. Those you saw restored were those who never found homes. When a rescuer arrives, they are allowed to perform one, final act of rescue. So very different from 5 years ago. No helicopters all over the sky like the Vietnam War. No shiny new stolen trucks cruising the streets at night full of kid with guns looting. They slowed down in front of my house one night, the dogs began to bark and I heard the kids step on the gas and disappear.<div><br /></div><div>I started rescuing before the winds had died down all the way. So many fences came down and I saw everyone's dirty dog laundry. It was heartbreaking, but at the time there was no time to be sad. I was jumping fences and avoiding the live wires from downed power lines. I was assaulted by what I realize in hindsight were probably desperate drug addicts.</div><div><br /></div><div>5 years ago I had been on my own for days. It was about this time that the army came with rifles. They told me I had to leave. There were dogs, mostly pit bulls, running ALL OVER the streets. I told the soldiers that I would handle the dogs. After conferring amongst themselves, they told me I could stay. Soon after, 3 awesome women from Nebraska found me and came bearing supplies. I had a lot of supplies. I was prepared, but wow was it nice to see them. I sent my first few loads of dogs out with them.</div><div><br /></div><div>The Military started showing up at my house at the end of each day with a list of addresses where there were pets in need of food and water or rescue. As they did their house to house checks, it was obviously hard for them to see these pets and not be able to help. Often I saw soldiers with groups of dogs following them. They were not allowed to interact with the animals. They started bringing me water, ice and military rations.<div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div>USED DOGS' Katrina rescue #1</div><div>This guy spent the WHOLE storm on a chain with no shelter. No food or water.</div><div><br /></div><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 271px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgf3b2HG-goiLWGunkEp2cKezYG1rUh2rOrpAqUsFcKxam8ro9y1diuXUtAXfQhqIORdpSjHDDUdK7oGMW0r5Wt5w5HUVTKob3UQUZOqr4M9rJn3cHQTFtbGFubW99BZTcRrlU3LOwROM2I/s320/Katrina+rescue+%231+Reduced.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514021661284812370" border="0" /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div>There were many, many more. Hundreds upon hundreds.</div><div><br /></div><div>USED DOGS' yard post storm:</div><div><br /></div><div><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhniot6SzeiikFvkSCuo_LsjRCbb_Wy8L4p1JjFU22KhnMVj6oI6EVFCkXtXb0NySw01OBCRf2iL2-xbwLa_KzGGjpDKxEl3lfQwo9AZF_N-mjJGMKel9XWiCv02HXbD5t2q5vWZpRnFz91/s320/Strom+yard_1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514021425462272114" border="0" /></div><div><br /></div><div>With help from some great volunteers from Pennsylvania, we kept rescuing from dusk until dawn for around 35 days. More supplies arrived. I didn't stop until the animals I was finding were starting to all be dead. </div><div><br /></div><div>My route continued to grow as I fed dogs in place that were safe in yards. For me this wasn't a time to judge. I knew some of these dogs had families that loved them, because I had driven past their houses for years. </div><div><br /></div><div>I argued with a guy over local Jazz legend Clarence Frogman Henry's dog . This kid wanted to ship him off to Washington state. Frogman was in New York doing a fundraiser. He didn't realize there was a part of his fence loose and "Boomer" got out. Several firemen came to my assistance and helped me retain possession of the Great Dane. "Boomer had been injured. Dr. Gutter was around and he made a house call. Boomer and Mr Henry were very happily reunited.</div><div><br /></div><div>But I am not writing this to dwell on the sorrow. I am writing this, hoping that in someway it will be part of the cathartic process that with time will help my heart to heal.</div><div><br /></div><div>This dog I actually named. Most of the dogs that I sent thru LaMar Dixon had numbers. There were SO MANY. But this guy I named and he really stole my heart. I never found out what happened to him. I tried. I sent him off to Nebraska with some very fine people before before there was any "system" for the dogs to be processed thru. I so hope he found happiness and love in a home.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8rk3gUd8nAzKJKJNNpVqob6qC8ebZ7aeD8mmifsApS-KCt0ZrEa2M7crqEyo3-Ep16PP0wwzUfHBT_CuT0D6T-Eli5dX0lLMiHMw-rXLC1Xti8WOAzhcuOBwCRhWsfIO8DyLZLSkmxtLz/s320/Katrina+rescue+Roddy.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514021158893424114" border="0" /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>65% of all the dogs that were rescued out of Katrina were pit bull or pit bull mixes. 95% of all the dogs were NOT spay/neutered. Those statistics spelled out a part of my post storm mission. USED DOGS had the first Low to No cost Pit bull spay/neuter program available after the storm!</div><div><br /></div></div>Madalinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14277144402825507436noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8242079392168426781.post-46341491123915946922010-08-30T18:55:00.004-05:002010-08-30T19:05:54.911-05:00Olga Featured by Facebook's Save A Dog!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhf23l7UW_MPhGdQiBJiYc8kwJYMiJbnSdKvfBTb8sYEZUr1-e1rFomGJOwaC_q3nlfqagVX0giScMKZLOd0h8LmIleFSe9BWkbX8WJn8nkxJmqtNyCP_sBiYwu_1AQBacBTW5-MMDdmTYH/s1600/Olga.jpg"><img style="float: left; margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhf23l7UW_MPhGdQiBJiYc8kwJYMiJbnSdKvfBTb8sYEZUr1-e1rFomGJOwaC_q3nlfqagVX0giScMKZLOd0h8LmIleFSe9BWkbX8WJn8nkxJmqtNyCP_sBiYwu_1AQBacBTW5-MMDdmTYH/s320/Olga.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5511357999025450642" border="0" /></a><br />Guess what - Olga has been selected as the Dog of the Week for <a href="http://apps.facebook.com/save-a-dog/of-the-week">Facebook's Save A Dog application</a>! How neat is that? We didn't even know until today. Her "week" was August 23-30. What's more, our Sarah was the Dog of the Week for July 26-August 2. I have no idea how that happened, but it is cool!<br /><br /><a href="http://useddogsrescue.blogspot.com/2010/07/sarah-pit-bull.html">Sarah</a> was the dog that brought me to rescue by walking up to me on the streets and collapsing at my feet. That was many years ago. In reality, she has become my mascot of heart.<br /><br /><a href="http://useddogsrescue.blogspot.com/2010/07/olga.html">Olga</a> was one of a litter of nine puppies born in an abandoned house here in New Orleans. Shortly after that, the house caught on fire. As a neighbor stood watching, not knowing what to do, out of the house came the momma dog carrying a puppy. She deposited the puppy on the neighbor's doorstep then dashed back into the burning home. She repeated this time and again until all nine puppies were safe! That brave momma and eight of the puppies have long since found their forever homes, but Olga has not. Now seven years old, she has matured into a lovely, petite dog of great intelligence. Although very attached to me, I still hope that one day she will have a home of her own.Hollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14531739777288957426noreply@blogger.com5
